DENZEL WASHINGTON: From a Red Raiders wannabe to Hollywood icon

In an industry where fame is hard to come by and rarely lasts long Denzel has certainly made an indelible mark, working his way from zero to hero, with three Golden Globe and two Academy awards as worthy feathers for his legendary cap. Notable as the second African American to win an Oscar, for best actor, his works have earned him critical acclaim especially his portrayal of a variety of real life figures including South African freedom fighter Steve Biko, Malcolm X, boxer Robin “Hurricane” Carter, Melvin B. Tolson, Frank Lucas, Hernan Boone and himself in the Lorreta Clairborne story movie. Born Denzel Hayes Washington Jr. to Lennis “Lyne”, a beauty parlor owner and Rev. Denzel Washington Sr. a Pentecostal minister who also worked for the local Water Department and a local department store “S. Klein” Denzel is quoted to have said “I grew up the Boys Club in Mt. Vernon & we were the Red Raiders. So when I was in high school, I wanted to go to Texas Tech just because they were called the Red Raiders and their uniforms looked like ours”. Nonetheless Denzel completed a B.a. in Drama and Journalism from Fordham university, where he played basketball as a freshman guard, after a turbulent period of bouncing from major to major and dropping out of school for a semester. It was while working as a counselor at an overnight summer camp and participating in a staff talent show, that a friend suggested that he try acting: A star was born. Returning to Fordhham that fall, with a renewed vision, he enrolled at the Lincoln Center campus to study acting. He earned rave reviews for his role as title character in Eugene O’Neill’s The Emperor Jones and Shakespeare’s Othello. Upon graduation, he attended graduate school, on scholarship, at the American Conservative Theater in San Francisco. He stayed in San Francisco for a year, before returning to New York to begin a pro career that has seen him grow into one of Hollywood’s true legends, featuring in several Box Office hits along the line. A devout Christian, Denzel is one of a few Hollywood stars to stay married to a single spouse for over two decades. He married actress Pamela Washington (Nee Pearson) in 1983, whom he met on the set of his first screen role, Wilma. The couple renewed their marriage vows in South Africa in 1995, with the Arch Bishop Desmond Tutu officiating. Recipient of an honorary Doctorate of Humanities from Morehouse college in 2007, Denzel has won a number of awards including Academy Awards for best supporting actor in 1990 and best actor in 2000, BET Awards for best actor in 2001 & 2004, best actor in Berlin International Film Festival 1993 & 2000, Golden Globe awards for best actor in a drama motion picture 1990 &2000 amongst countless other nominations for different prestigious awards. He was also voted the people’s sexiest man alive in 1996, succeeding Brad Pitt and succeeded by George Clooney. Aside from discovering his talent Denzel has also strived to make a difference in society. He made a sizeable donation to the Fisher Houses, small hotels that provide rooms for soldiers families while the soldiers are hospitalized. He also wrote a bestseller, entitled A Hand to Guide Me, for The Boys and Girls Club of America’s centennial anniversary. The book featured a number of public figures recalling their childhood mentors. A testimonial of his broad acceptance was his being named as one of the three people, by the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia whom they were willing to negotiate with for the release of three US defense contractors held captive since 2003.

LENNOX LEWIS ON

Goals:
“During the past 23 years, I have set a number of goals, for myself and am proud to say that these goals have been achieved. Now I am ready to set new goals and start a new career for myself outside of the ring.” Improvement:
“I understand that to be a god actor, I have to become somebody else……….I am taking acting lessons from several coaches. Whatever I do I always want to get better.”
Defeat:
“One thing I learned in boxing is that defeat properly handled makes a person stronger. You cant walk in the rain without getting wet and you cant be in a boxing ring without getting hit………….Winning and losing for me are on the same page. In my book you have to accept them both.”

SAMUEL ETO’O ON:

Work “I’ve always scored goals, but I’ve worked on timing. Work, work, work. You get results if you work………….out of every hundred stones you throw you never know which one will kill the bird. ” Training “A player doesn’t try anything in a match that he hasn’t tried a thousand times in training, the only difference is that you are doing it in front of one hundred thousand people. Nothing in a match [as in life] is by chance. Everything is done in training, then your talent and the gift you have helps you succeed in what you’ve on.” Focus “I don’t go out often I devour football. I ask my brother to prepare hundreds of Barca’s attacking game, because I want to know everything my teammates are thinking. Its my unseen training. Off the pitch I digest information. I anticipate I don’t guess.” Discipline “My strength is to keep my position. I always try to play for the team, whichever team it is. I am disciplined and I get upset when others aren’t.” Concentration “Its fundamental to be able to shove out of your mind the thousands of things that can pollute your spirit in that moment.” Mentorship “The chats I had with Henrik at Barca were very precious…………… he allowed me to excel. Henrik taught me how to become invisible, how to make others forget about me.” Roots “The continent is a mental state. I live in Europe but I sleep in Africa. Every goal of mine is a celebration of there. Hopefully I’ll have time to do more things for people in Africa.”

I STOOD YESTERDAY I CAN STAND TODAY (BY DOROTHY DIX)

I have known want and struggle and anxiety and despair. I have always had to work beyond the limit of my strength. As I look back upon my life I see it as a battle field strewn with the wrecks of dead dreams and broken hopes and shattered illusions – a battle in which I always fought against odds tremendously against me and which had me bruise and scared and maimed and old before my time. Yet I have no pity for myself; no tears to shed over the past and gone sorrows; no envy for the women who have been spared all I have gone through. For I have lived, they only existed. I have drunk the cup of life down to its very dregs. They have only sipped the bubbles on top of it. I know things they will never know. I see things to which they are blind. It is only the women whose eyes have been washed clear with tears who get the broad vision that makes them little sisters to all the world. I have learned in the great University of Hard Knocks a philosophy that no woman who has had an easy life ever acquires. I have learned to live each day as it comes and not to borrow trouble by dreading the morrow. It is the dark menace of the future that makes coward of us. I put that dread from me because experience has taught me that when the time comes that I so fear, the strength and wisdom to meet it will be given me. Little annoyances no longer have the power to affect me. After you have seen your life whole edifice of happiness topple and crash in ruins about you, it never matters to you again that a servant forgets to put the doylies under finger bowls, or the cook spills the soup. I have learned not to expect too much of people, & so I can still get happiness out of the friend who isn’t quite true to me or the acquaintance who gossips. Above all, I have either to laugh or cry and when a woman can joke over her troubles instead of having hysterics, nothing can ever hurt much again. I do not regret the hardships I have known because through them I have touched life at every point I have lived and it was worth the price I had to pay. When people ask me what has kept me going through the troubles that come to all of us, I always reply: “I stood yesterday I can stand today. And I will not permit myself to think about what might happen tomorrow.”

Upbringing “my parents worked hard and had tenacity.” Learning A self-confessed bookwormwho reads up to ten books at a time she says “It has been a huge learning curve for me and there is still a lot to learn. The challenges are without doubt numerous but again they have forced me to push myself harder to learn more.” Practice According to this broadcasting icon, for whom presenting programs has become second nature, there was a time when this wasn’t so “The more you do something, the more comfortable you feel doing it………that naturally leads to an improvement in how you perform your duties” Maturing “Getting older in my mind means that you have experienced the things of life and you can reflect a little on what you have done right and what some of the things are that you may not be so pleased about.” Honours Roll: At 30 she had interviewed Mandela, Bush, Kofi Anan and the Dalai Lama among other world leaders. MY CREED (BY DEAN ALFANGE)

I don’t choose to be a common man – it is my right to be uncommon if I can. I seek opportunity not security. I do not wish to be a kept citizen humbled and dulled by having the state look after me. I prefer to take risk, to dream and to build, to fail and to succeed. I refuse to barter incentive for a dole. I prefer the challenges of life to the guaranteed existence. The thrill of fulfillment to the calm state of Utopia. I will not trade my freedom for beneficence, nor my dignity for a handout. I’ll never lower before any master nor bend to any threat. It is my heritage to stand erect, proud and unafraid. To think and to act for myself, enjoy the benefits of my creations and face the world and say ‘this I have done’

ARSENE WENGER ON

Winning Mentality “The mentality of a winner: to produce when it is [most] needed, no more than that.” Competitiveness “I read an interesting article talking about what is common among winners in every sport. Both men and women, and it said it was competitiveness and composure at the right moment.” Determination “that common denominator [among winners] of refusing to not win and mixing that with composure. That means not being terrified when you have a chance and I think that makes a winner.” Procrastination “I’ve seen many fail because they have inhibitions, and in top competition [as in life & business] you cant have inhibitions when you are under pressure.”

12 STEPS TO CREATIVITY (GARY FELLERS)

1. Believe that you can become more creative and you will. 2. Accept the existence of the mysterious subconscious that incubates all previous experience into facts and creative ideas. 3. With the goal of having more fun create a life plan to “enrich” the subconscious. 4. Patiently trust that answers will come. 5. Trigger the subconscious by “visualizing” the desired outcome in general terms. 6. Surrender to your sage and ask to be led to the correct experiences to achieve your life purposes. 7. Write a life’s purpose and prioritize around what’s important. 8. Make a game of saving time: your most precious resource deserves constant attention. 9. Become a fanatic of present-mindedness; attending to the work at hand, put appointments on your calendar to deal with distractions later. 10. Leave no stress unattended. Eliminate the situation or temporarily trick the brain’s biochemical processes especially with humor. 11. To advance your interests be ordinary. 12. Stamp out all judgmental behavior and thoughts.

MOHAMMED ‘THE GREATEST ‘ ALI

On champions “Champions are not made in the gyms. Champions are made from something deep inside them, a desire, a dream, a vision.” On Service “Service is the rent you pay for your room here on earth.” True Freedom “I know I got it made while the masses of black people are catchin hell, but as long as I aint free, they aint free.” The Point: It is in serving each other that we become truly free. As the good book says ‘he who will be greatest among you must be the servant of all’

10 GUIDELINES FOR SUCCESS (BY MARSHALL FIELD)

1. The value of time – don’t waste it. 2. The value of perseverance – don’t give up. 3. The value of hard work – don’t be lazy. 4. The dignity of simplicity – don’t be complicated. 5. The worth of character – don’t be dishonest. 6. The power of kindness – don’t be uncaring. 7. The power of duty – don’t shun responsibility. 8. The wisdom of economy – don’t be a spendthrift. 9. The virtue of patience – don’t be impatient. 10. The improvement of skills – don’t stop practicing.

THOMAS ALVA EDISON: Journey through the mind and defining thoughts of an enigma(2)

THOMAS EDISON ON: Education “Our schools are not teaching students to think. It is astonishing how many young people have trouble putting their brains definitely and systematically to work.” Failure “Many of life’s failures are experienced by people who didn’t realize how close they were to success when they gave up.” Good Fortune “Unfortunately there seems to be far more opportunity out there than ability………we should remember that good fortune often happens when opportunity meets preparation.” Discontent “Pretty much everything will come to him who hustles while he waits. I believe that restlessness is discontent and discontent is merely the first necessity of progress. Show me a thoroughly satisfied man and I will show you a failure.” Adaptability “Just because something doesn’t do what you planned it to do in the first place doesn’t mean it is useless.” Wealth “From his neck down a man is worth a couple of dollars a day, from his neck up he is worth anything that his brain can produce.” Time “Time is really the only capital that any human being has and the thing that he can least afford to waste or lose……….The only time I really become discouraged is when I think of all the things I would like to and the little time I have in which to do them.” Long Life “Barring any serious accidents, if you are not occupied with worry you can look forward to a reasonably lengthy existence………..it is not the work that kills, rather it is the worrying that kills.” Work over Worry “As a cure for worrying work is far better than whiskey. I always found that if I began to worry, the best thing I could do was to focus on something useful and then work very hard at it. Soon I’d forget what was troubling me.” Doing over Dabbling “I have far more respect for person with a single idea who gets there than for the person with a thousand ideas who does nothing.” Wellness over Medicine “The doctor of the future will give no medicine, but will interest his patients in the care of the human body, in diet and in the cause and prevention of disease.” Character “Whatever the mind of man creates should be controlled by his character.” Ignorance “It is obvious that we don’t know one millionth of one percent about anything……..until man can duplicate a blade of grass, nature can only laugh at his so called scientific knowledge.” Chemistry “The science of chemistry alone almost proves the existence of an intelligent creator.” Eternity “To me the idea and expectation that the day is coming when we will be able to honestly say we are oour brother’s keeper and not his oppressor is very beautiful.” Knowledge “We have merely scratched the surface of the store of knowledge that will come to us. I believe that we are on the verge of vast discoveries so wondrously important they will upset the present trend of human thought and start it along new lines.” The Greatest Inheritance “If parents could pass enthusiasm along to their children, they will have left them an estate of incalculable value.” Planning “I never did anything worth doing by accident …………. Almost none of my inventions were derived in that manner. They were achieved by having trained myself to be analytical and to endure & tolerate hard work.” His Advantage “Even though I am nearly deaf, seem to be blessed with a kind of inner hearing which enables me to detect sounds and noises the listeners do not perceive.” Experimenting I accept almost nothing ……….. without thoroughly testing it first. Edison’s favourite piece of poetry which he recited within earshot of his associates was stanza nine from Thomas Grey’s Elegy to a Country – Churchyard “The boast of heraldry, the pomp of power, and all that beauty, all that wealth e’er gave, Awaits alike the inevitable hour, The paths of glory lead but to the grave”

FIGHT ONE MORE ROUND (JAMES CORBETT)

Fight one more round, when your feet are so tired that you have shuffle back to the center of the ring, fight one more round When your arms are so tired that you can hardly lift your hands to come on guard, fight one more round When your nose is bleeding and your eyes are black and you are so tired that you wish your opponent would crack you one on the jaw & put you to sleep, fight one round Remembering that the man who fights one more round is never whipped

THOMAS ALVA EDISON: Journey through the mind and defining thoughts of an enigma(1)

Few things fascinate me more than success stories, stories of people who broke the barriers of adversity, social and economic limitations to reach their potential and made a difference in the world. My map on the journey to the top has been the mind and thoughts of great men recorded for posterity. In looking through these minds I have made discoveries far above the level of gold and diamond mines, much greater than the discovery of a fresh spring in a desert land. Thomas Edison was summarily written of by both his school teacher as “addled” and his own father, yet it was written of him “he led no armies to battle, he conquered no countries and he enslaved no peoples………none the less he exerted a degree of power the magnitude of which no warrior ever dreamed.” The life of Edison, his trials and triumphs, beautifully captures the essence of my life – opportunity. Edison took advantage of the opportunities that the challenges of his life presented & turned adversity to his advantage, while making a difference to the world. The next time you turn on a light bulb do remember that it was Edison who invented the technology amongst countless others; he was also the first man to record the human voice. Edison overcame prejudice and stereotypes to become one of the greatest inventors of all time (with over one thousand patents to his name). he was an enigma indeed, far ahead of his time in thoughts and deeds’ yet grossly misunderstood and sometimes unappreciated. Fasten your seatbelt as we undertake a fascinating and jolly ride into one of the greatest minds of the industrial age. THOMAS EDISON ON: His Mother “The memory of my mother will always be a blessing to me……………… [she] was the making of me ………… [because] she was always so true and so sure of me………and always made me feel I had someone to live for and not disappoint.” His Purpose “My main purpose in life is to make more money to create ever more inventions…………. The dove is my emblem ………….. I want to save human life & not destroy it……….. I am proud of the fact that I never invented weapons to kill.” Service “I never perfected an invention that I did not think about in terms of the service it might give others ……… I find what the world needs, then I proceed to invent it.” Adding Value “My principal business consists of giving commercial value to the brilliant but misdirected ideas of others. Accordingly I never pick up an item without thinking of how I might improve it.” Originality “Because ideas have to be original only regards to their adaptation to the problem at hand, I am always extremely interested in how others have used them……….I readily absorb ideas from every source, frequently starting off where the last person left off. I am quite correctly described as more of a sponge than an inventor.” Power of Ideas “A good idea is never lost. Even though its originator may die without publicizing it, it will someday be reborn in the mind of another.” Genius “Genius is 99% perspiration and 1% inspiration. Accordingly a ‘genius’ is often a talented person who has done all of his homework.” Opportunity “Opportunity is missed by most people because it is dressed in overalls and looks like work.” Focus “The first requisite for success is to develop the ability to focus and apply your mental and physical energies to the problem at hand, without growing weary. Because such thinking is often difficult, there seems to be no limit to which some people go to avoid the effort and labour that is associated with it.” Potential “If we did all the things we are capable of we would literally astound ourselves.”

R. KELLY ON

Achievement “I believe that the depth of your struggle determines the height of your achievement. What you’ve been through creates a passion for what you are preparing yourself for.” Obsession “I used to be obsessed with making music and writing songs…. Its who I am now I don’t even mess around with it anymore, I walk it, it just comes to me.” Commitment “When you come from your heart and soul in anything that you do, someone with a heart and soul will feel what you do.” Practice When you practice consistently “the acting becomes the reality and the reality becomes the acting” Focus “You can change the frame but the picture remains the same.” Drive “I still have a lot in me to give out” Roots “I don’t forget where I come from I miss it and that’s why there’s a certain humbleness to my music and what I do” Learning “I studied people……….I just studied movies, I don’t just watch them for entertainment.” Impact “I definitely want to make a mark with my music. Something that just lasts; even when am gone its still here.” Born Robert Sylvester Kelly, R. Kelly has emerged and made a definite statement not just as the undisputed king of R & B music but also for his versatility whether as a producer, writer or his venturing into genres of music. Who better than Kells to talk to us on life today? In spite of the fact that Kelly has a number of dents to his name he is merely a reflection of the true state of mankind which comprises both good and bad, it all depends on which you choose to focus on. We must learn to eliminate judgment from our nature and take people for who they are. R. KELLY ON Achievement “I believe that the depth of your struggle determines the height of your achievement. MY MESSAGE

I was reading through the dailies when it hit me like a blow of awakening and enlightenment: “To be a leader……..To be an achiever………..To be the greatest. THINK POSSIBLE” For me while this statement best captures the essence of Bank PHB’s new ad campaign with the theme: Achieve the extraordinary, for me on a personal level it best captures the essence of my life’s struggles, the legacy I want to bequeath to future generations and indeed my message to my generation. The bane of our youth and indeed the larger society, has been a full knowledge of what doesn’t work, what can’t work and what will never work, thus the wretched state of our economic and social lives. Even without trying we know what is impossible. “That? Me? No, impossible” is a common refrain amongst the majority of us. My message is one of POSSIBILITY CONSCIOUSNESS. Rather than saying it cant be done “Impossible” we must learn to say “I’m possible.” We must learn to carry a POSSIBILITY CONSCIOUSNESS in our heads and hearts, allowing it to reflect in our every action. My message however is one of hope, of the beauty tomorrow holds, only if we TRY. We need to learn how to think outside the box, for as Einstein said “problems cannot be solved by the level of thinking that created them.” To discover what is POSSIBLE we must begin as a matter of national emergency, a program of self – discovery and self – application. MY MESSAGE to the youth of today is that the solution to our problems cannot be found in meaningless strife and purposeless activity. The solution to our problems cannot be found through wasting countless hours watching home videos, nor are they to be found in music videos which are mostly vulgar, not in the sticks of cigarette nor wraps of weed. Even bottles of alcohol have failed, as have expensive phones, shoes, clothes and a host of other material things. Only within us does true change and progress begin. Each must define his own vision for life, within the context of benefit to others. By defining our vision we would each find the road that leads to it, rather than following the crowd mentality, each must discover his own path and seek to be a leader in that sphere. The man who follows the crowd is bound to get lost in it. While being focused we must always seek to extend the light in our lives, so that our every action is based on knowledge and purpose. In order to increase the light we must see our life as a big learning curve. Knowledge indeed is power. We must therefore see education as a lifetime endeavor “education for life not for living.” We must become “students of life and students for life” seeking knowledge and understanding with every fiber of our being. We must emerge from the shadows of negative press (real and imagined) in which we have been cast, to shine a positive light on our world through our deeds, be they so little. It is our time to shine, shine our light, brimming with optimism, faith and positive actions powered by POSSIBILITY CONSCIOUSNESS. In closing I borrow the words of my dear Bank PHB again “Impossible is possible that hasn’t been done” and “If it doesn’t exist…………invent it.” We have no excuse whatsoever for not embarking on a lifetime journey of potential maximization.

PERSONAL SACRIFICE

Personal sacrifice is inspiring to others, it brings hope to discouraged souls: it produces growth and maturity. There is no true leadership or responsibility without sacrifice. Doing the right thing always pays off, probably not right away, but the momentary relief of an easy solution is nothing compared to the eternal joy of choosing right. When you selflessly give for another, you build an honourable reputation, and promotion will surely follow. Ella Wheeler Wilcox captures the essence of sacrifice beautifully when she says that “there are two kinds of people on earth today. Just two kinds of people no more, I say. Not the good and the bad; for it is well known that the good are half bad & the bad are half good. No! The 2 kinds of people I mean are those who lift and those who lean.”
