DENZEL WASHINGTON: From a Red Raiders wannabe to Hollywood icon

In an industry where fame is hard to come by and rarely lasts long Denzel has certainly made an indelible mark, working his way from zero to hero, with three Golden Globe and two Academy awards as worthy feathers for his legendary cap. Notable as the second African American to win an Oscar, for best actor, his works have earned him critical acclaim especially his portrayal of a variety of real life figures including South African freedom fighter Steve Biko, Malcolm X, boxer Robin “Hurricane” Carter, Melvin B. Tolson, Frank Lucas, Hernan Boone and himself in the Lorreta Clairborne story movie. Born Denzel Hayes Washington Jr. to Lennis “Lyne”, a beauty parlor owner and Rev. Denzel Washington Sr. a Pentecostal minister who also worked for the local Water Department and a local department store “S. Klein” Denzel is quoted to have said “I grew up the Boys Club in Mt. Vernon & we were the Red Raiders. So when I was in high school, I wanted to go to Texas Tech just because they were called the Red Raiders and their uniforms looked like ours”. Nonetheless Denzel completed a B.a. in Drama and Journalism from Fordham university, where he played basketball as a freshman guard, after a turbulent period of bouncing from major to major and dropping out of school for a semester. It was while working as a counselor at an overnight summer camp and participating in a staff talent show, that a friend suggested that he try acting: A star was born. Returning to Fordhham that fall, with a renewed vision, he enrolled at the Lincoln Center campus to study acting. He earned rave reviews for his role as title character in Eugene O’Neill’s The Emperor Jones and Shakespeare’s Othello. Upon graduation, he attended graduate school, on scholarship, at the American Conservative Theater in San Francisco. He stayed in San Francisco for a year, before returning to New York to begin a pro career that has seen him grow into one of Hollywood’s true legends, featuring in several Box Office hits along the line. A devout Christian, Denzel is one of a few Hollywood stars to stay married to a single spouse for over two decades. He married actress Pamela Washington (Nee Pearson) in 1983, whom he met on the set of his first screen role, Wilma. The couple renewed their marriage vows in South Africa in 1995, with the Arch Bishop Desmond Tutu officiating. Recipient of an honorary Doctorate of Humanities from Morehouse college in 2007, Denzel has won a number of awards including Academy Awards for best supporting actor in 1990 and best actor in 2000, BET Awards for best actor in 2001 & 2004, best actor in Berlin International Film Festival 1993 & 2000, Golden Globe awards for best actor in a drama motion picture 1990 &2000 amongst countless other nominations for different prestigious awards. He was also voted the people’s sexiest man alive in 1996, succeeding Brad Pitt and succeeded by George Clooney. Aside from discovering his talent Denzel has also strived to make a difference in society. He made a sizeable donation to the Fisher Houses, small hotels that provide rooms for soldiers families while the soldiers are hospitalized. He also wrote a bestseller, entitled A Hand to Guide Me, for The Boys and Girls Club of America’s centennial anniversary. The book featured a number of public figures recalling their childhood mentors. A testimonial of his broad acceptance was his being named as one of the three people, by the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia whom they were willing to negotiate with for the release of three US defense contractors held captive since 2003.

LENNOX LEWIS ON

Goals:
“During the past 23 years, I have set a number of goals, for myself and am proud to say that these goals have been achieved. Now I am ready to set new goals and start a new career for myself outside of the ring.” Improvement:
“I understand that to be a god actor, I have to become somebody else……….I am taking acting lessons from several coaches. Whatever I do I always want to get better.”
Defeat:
“One thing I learned in boxing is that defeat properly handled makes a person stronger. You cant walk in the rain without getting wet and you cant be in a boxing ring without getting hit………….Winning and losing for me are on the same page. In my book you have to accept them both.”

SAMUEL ETO’O ON:

Work “I’ve always scored goals, but I’ve worked on timing. Work, work, work. You get results if you work………….out of every hundred stones you throw you never know which one will kill the bird. ” Training “A player doesn’t try anything in a match that he hasn’t tried a thousand times in training, the only difference is that you are doing it in front of one hundred thousand people. Nothing in a match [as in life] is by chance. Everything is done in training, then your talent and the gift you have helps you succeed in what you’ve on.” Focus “I don’t go out often I devour football. I ask my brother to prepare hundreds of Barca’s attacking game, because I want to know everything my teammates are thinking. Its my unseen training. Off the pitch I digest information. I anticipate I don’t guess.” Discipline “My strength is to keep my position. I always try to play for the team, whichever team it is. I am disciplined and I get upset when others aren’t.” Concentration “Its fundamental to be able to shove out of your mind the thousands of things that can pollute your spirit in that moment.” Mentorship “The chats I had with Henrik at Barca were very precious…………… he allowed me to excel. Henrik taught me how to become invisible, how to make others forget about me.” Roots “The continent is a mental state. I live in Europe but I sleep in Africa. Every goal of mine is a celebration of there. Hopefully I’ll have time to do more things for people in Africa.”

I STOOD YESTERDAY I CAN STAND TODAY (BY DOROTHY DIX)

I have known want and struggle and anxiety and despair. I have always had to work beyond the limit of my strength. As I look back upon my life I see it as a battle field strewn with the wrecks of dead dreams and broken hopes and shattered illusions – a battle in which I always fought against odds tremendously against me and which had me bruise and scared and maimed and old before my time. Yet I have no pity for myself; no tears to shed over the past and gone sorrows; no envy for the women who have been spared all I have gone through. For I have lived, they only existed. I have drunk the cup of life down to its very dregs. They have only sipped the bubbles on top of it. I know things they will never know. I see things to which they are blind. It is only the women whose eyes have been washed clear with tears who get the broad vision that makes them little sisters to all the world. I have learned in the great University of Hard Knocks a philosophy that no woman who has had an easy life ever acquires. I have learned to live each day as it comes and not to borrow trouble by dreading the morrow. It is the dark menace of the future that makes coward of us. I put that dread from me because experience has taught me that when the time comes that I so fear, the strength and wisdom to meet it will be given me. Little annoyances no longer have the power to affect me. After you have seen your life whole edifice of happiness topple and crash in ruins about you, it never matters to you again that a servant forgets to put the doylies under finger bowls, or the cook spills the soup. I have learned not to expect too much of people, & so I can still get happiness out of the friend who isn’t quite true to me or the acquaintance who gossips. Above all, I have either to laugh or cry and when a woman can joke over her troubles instead of having hysterics, nothing can ever hurt much again. I do not regret the hardships I have known because through them I have touched life at every point I have lived and it was worth the price I had to pay. When people ask me what has kept me going through the troubles that come to all of us, I always reply: “I stood yesterday I can stand today. And I will not permit myself to think about what might happen tomorrow.”

The challenges are without doubt numerous but again they have forced me to push myself harder to learn more.” Practice According to this broadcasting icon, for whom presenting programs has become second nature, there was a time when this wasn’t so “The more you do something, the more comfortable you feel doing it………that naturally leads to an improvement in how you perform your duties” Maturing “Getting older in my mind means that you have experienced the things of life and you can reflect a little on what you have done right and what some of the things are that you may not be so pleased about.” Honours Roll: At 30 she had interviewed Mandela, Bush, Kofi Anan and the Dalai Lama among other world leaders. MY CREED (BY DEAN ALFANGE)

I don’t choose to be a common man – it is my right to be uncommon if I can. I seek opportunity not security. I do not wish to be a kept citizen humbled and dulled by having the state look after me. I prefer to take risk, to dream and to build, to fail and to succeed. I refuse to barter incentive for a dole. I prefer the challenges of life to the guaranteed existence. The thrill of fulfillment to the calm state of Utopia. I will not trade my freedom for beneficence, nor my dignity for a handout. I’ll never lower before any master nor bend to any threat. It is my heritage to stand erect, proud and unafraid. To think and to act for myself, enjoy the benefits of my creations and face the world and say ‘this I have done’

ARSENE WENGER ON

Winning Mentality “The mentality of a winner: to produce when it is [most] needed, no more than that.” Competitiveness “I read an interesting article talking about what is common among winners in every sport. Both men and women, and it said it was competitiveness and composure at the right moment.” Determination “that common denominator [among winners] of refusing to not win and mixing that with composure. That means not being terrified when you have a chance and I think that makes a winner.” Procrastination “I’ve seen many fail because they have inhibitions, and in top competition [as in life & business] you cant have inhibitions when you are under pressure.”

12 STEPS TO CREATIVITY (GARY FELLERS)

1. Believe that you can become more creative and you will. 2. Accept the existence of the mysterious subconscious that incubates all previous experience into facts and creative ideas. 3. With the goal of having more fun create a life plan to “enrich” the subconscious. 4. Patiently trust that answers will come. 5. Trigger the subconscious by “visualizing” the desired outcome in general terms. 6. Surrender to your sage and ask to be led to the correct experiences to achieve your life purposes. 7. Write a life’s purpose and prioritize around what’s important. 8. Make a game of saving time: your most precious resource deserves constant attention. 9. Become a fanatic of present-mindedness; attending to the work at hand, put appointments on your calendar to deal with distractions later. 10. Leave no stress unattended. Eliminate the situation or temporarily trick the brain’s biochemical processes especially with humor. 11. To advance your interests be ordinary. 12. Stamp out all judgmental behavior and thoughts.

MOHAMMED ‘THE GREATEST ‘ ALI

On champions “Champions are not made in the gyms. Champions are made from something deep inside them, a desire, a dream, a vision.” On Service “Service is the rent you pay for your room here on earth.” True Freedom “I know I got it made while the masses of black people are catchin hell, but as long as I aint free, they aint free.” The Point: It is in serving each other that we become truly free. As the good book says ‘he who will be greatest among you must be the servant of all’

10 GUIDELINES FOR SUCCESS (BY MARSHALL FIELD)

1. The value of time – don’t waste it. 2. The value of perseverance – don’t give up. 3. The value of hard work – don’t be lazy. 4. The dignity of simplicity – don’t be complicated. 5. The worth of character – don’t be dishonest. 6. The power of kindness – don’t be uncaring. 7. The power of duty – don’t shun responsibility. 8. The wisdom of economy – don’t be a spendthrift. 9. The virtue of patience – don’t be impatient. 10. The improvement of skills – don’t stop practicing.

THOMAS ALVA EDISON: Journey through the mind and defining thoughts of an enigma(2)

THOMAS EDISON ON: Education “Our schools are not teaching students to think. It is astonishing how many young people have trouble putting their brains definitely and systematically to work.” Failure “Many of life’s failures are experienced by people who didn’t realize how close they were to success when they gave up.” Good Fortune “Unfortunately there seems to be far more opportunity out there than ability………we should remember that good fortune often happens when opportunity meets preparation.” Discontent “Pretty much everything will come to him who hustles while he waits. I believe that restlessness is discontent and discontent is merely the first necessity of progress. Show me a thoroughly satisfied man and I will show you a failure.” Adaptability “Just because something doesn’t do what you planned it to do in the first place doesn’t mean it is useless.” Wealth “From his neck down a man is worth a couple of dollars a day, from his neck up he is worth anything that his brain can produce.” Time “Time is really the only capital that any human being has and the thing that he can least afford to waste or lose……….The only time I really become discouraged is when I think of all the things I would like to and the little time I have in which to do them.” Long Life “Barring any serious accidents, if you are not occupied with worry you can look forward to a reasonably lengthy existence………..it is not the work that kills, rather it is the worrying that kills.” Work over Worry “As a cure for worrying work is far better than whiskey. I always found that if I began to worry, the best thing I could do was to focus on something useful and then work very hard at it. Soon I’d forget what was troubling me.” Doing over Dabbling “I have far more respect for person with a single idea who gets there than for the person with a thousand ideas who does nothing.” Wellness over Medicine “The doctor of the future will give no medicine, but will interest his patients in the care of the human body, in diet and in the cause and prevention of disease.” Character “Whatever the mind of man creates should be controlled by his character.” Ignorance “It is obvious that we don’t know one millionth of one percent about anything……..until man can duplicate a blade of grass, nature can only laugh at his so called scientific knowledge.” Chemistry “The science of chemistry alone almost proves the existence of an intelligent creator.” Eternity “To me the idea and expectation that the day is coming when we will be able to honestly say we are oour brother’s keeper and not his oppressor is very beautiful.” Knowledge “We have merely scratched the surface of the store of knowledge that will come to us. I believe that we are on the verge of vast discoveries so wondrously important they will upset the present trend of human thought and start it along new lines.” The Greatest Inheritance “If parents could pass enthusiasm along to their children, they will have left them an estate of incalculable value.” Planning “I never did anything worth doing by accident …………. Almost none of my inventions were derived in that manner. They were achieved by having trained myself to be analytical and to endure & tolerate hard work.” His Advantage “Even though I am nearly deaf, seem to be blessed with a kind of inner hearing which enables me to detect sounds and noises the listeners do not perceive.” Experimenting I accept almost nothing ……….. without thoroughly testing it first. Edison’s favourite piece of poetry which he recited within earshot of his associates was stanza nine from Thomas Grey’s Elegy to a Country – Churchyard “The boast of heraldry, the pomp of power, and all that beauty, all that wealth e’er gave, Awaits alike the inevitable hour, The paths of glory lead but to the grave”

FIGHT ONE MORE ROUND (JAMES CORBETT)

Fight one more round, when your feet are so tired that you have shuffle back to the center of the ring, fight one more round When your arms are so tired that you can hardly lift your hands to come on guard, fight one more round When your nose is bleeding and your eyes are black and you are so tired that you wish your opponent would crack you one on the jaw & put you to sleep, fight one round Remembering that the man who fights one more round is never whipped

THOMAS ALVA EDISON: Journey through the mind and defining thoughts of an enigma(1)

Few things fascinate me more than success stories, stories of people who broke the barriers of adversity, social and economic limitations to reach their potential and made a difference in the world. My map on the journey to the top has been the mind and thoughts of great men recorded for posterity. In looking through these minds I have made discoveries far above the level of gold and diamond mines, much greater than the discovery of a fresh spring in a desert land. Thomas Edison was summarily written of by both his school teacher as “addled” and his own father, yet it was written of him “he led no armies to battle, he conquered no countries and he enslaved no peoples………none the less he exerted a degree of power the magnitude of which no warrior ever dreamed.” The life of Edison, his trials and triumphs, beautifully captures the essence of my life – opportunity. Edison took advantage of the opportunities that the challenges of his life presented & turned adversity to his advantage, while making a difference to the world. The next time you turn on a light bulb do remember that it was Edison who invented the technology amongst countless others; he was also the first man to record the human voice. Edison overcame prejudice and stereotypes to become one of the greatest inventors of all time (with over one thousand patents to his name). he was an enigma indeed, far ahead of his time in thoughts and deeds’ yet grossly misunderstood and sometimes unappreciated. Fasten your seatbelt as we undertake a fascinating and jolly ride into one of the greatest minds of the industrial age. THOMAS EDISON ON: His Mother “The memory of my mother will always be a blessing to me……………… [she] was the making of me ………… [because] she was always so true and so sure of me………and always made me feel I had someone to live for and not disappoint.” His Purpose “My main purpose in life is to make more money to create ever more inventions…………. The dove is my emblem ………….. I want to save human life & not destroy it……….. I am proud of the fact that I never invented weapons to kill.” Service “I never perfected an invention that I did not think about in terms of the service it might give others ……… I find what the world needs, then I proceed to invent it.” Adding Value “My principal business consists of giving commercial value to the brilliant but misdirected ideas of others. Accordingly I never pick up an item without thinking of how I might improve it.” Originality “Because ideas have to be original only regards to their adaptation to the problem at hand, I am always extremely interested in how others have used them……….I readily absorb ideas from every source, frequently starting off where the last person left off. I am quite correctly described as more of a sponge than an inventor.” Power of Ideas “A good idea is never lost. Even though its originator may die without publicizing it, it will someday be reborn in the mind of another.” Genius “Genius is 99% perspiration and 1% inspiration. Accordingly a ‘genius’ is often a talented person who has done all of his homework.” Opportunity “Opportunity is missed by most people because it is dressed in overalls and looks like work.” Focus “The first requisite for success is to develop the ability to focus and apply your mental and physical energies to the problem at hand, without growing weary. Because such thinking is often difficult, there seems to be no limit to which some people go to avoid the effort and labour that is associated with it.” Potential “If we did all the things we are capable of we would literally astound ourselves.”

R. KELLY ON

Achievement “I believe that the depth of your struggle determines the height of your achievement. What you’ve been through creates a passion for what you are preparing yourself for.” Obsession “I used to be obsessed with making music and writing songs…. Its who I am now I don’t even mess around with it anymore, I walk it, it just comes to me.” Commitment “When you come from your heart and soul in anything that you do, someone with a heart and soul will feel what you do.” Practice When you practice consistently “the acting becomes the reality and the reality becomes the acting” Focus “You can change the frame but the picture remains the same.” Drive “I still have a lot in me to give out” Roots “I don’t forget where I come from I miss it and that’s why there’s a certain humbleness to my music and what I do” Learning “I studied people……….I just studied movies, I don’t just watch them for entertainment.” Impact “I definitely want to make a mark with my music. Something that just lasts; even when am gone its still here.” Born Robert Sylvester Kelly, R. Kelly has emerged and made a definite statement not just as the undisputed king of R & B music but also for his versatility whether as a producer, writer or his venturing into genres of music. Who better than Kells to talk to us on life today? In spite of the fact that Kelly has a number of dents to his name he is merely a reflection of the true state of mankind which comprises both good and bad, it all depends on which you choose to focus on. We must learn to eliminate judgment from our nature and take people for who they are. R. KELLY ON Achievement “I believe that the depth of your struggle determines the height of your achievement. MY MESSAGE

I was reading through the dailies when it hit me like a blow of awakening and enlightenment: “To be a leader……..To be an achiever………..To be the greatest. THINK POSSIBLE” For me while this statement best captures the essence of Bank PHB’s new ad campaign with the theme: Achieve the extraordinary, for me on a personal level it best captures the essence of my life’s struggles, the legacy I want to bequeath to future generations and indeed my message to my generation. The bane of our youth and indeed the larger society, has been a full knowledge of what doesn’t work, what can’t work and what will never work, thus the wretched state of our economic and social lives. Even without trying we know what is impossible. “That? Me? No, impossible” is a common refrain amongst the majority of us. My message is one of POSSIBILITY CONSCIOUSNESS. Rather than saying it cant be done “Impossible” we must learn to say “I’m possible.” We must learn to carry a POSSIBILITY CONSCIOUSNESS in our heads and hearts, allowing it to reflect in our every action. My message however is one of hope, of the beauty tomorrow holds, only if we TRY. We need to learn how to think outside the box, for as Einstein said “problems cannot be solved by the level of thinking that created them.” To discover what is POSSIBLE we must begin as a matter of national emergency, a program of self – discovery and self – application. MY MESSAGE to the youth of today is that the solution to our problems cannot be found in meaningless strife and purposeless activity. The solution to our problems cannot be found through wasting countless hours watching home videos, nor are they to be found in music videos which are mostly vulgar, not in the sticks of cigarette nor wraps of weed. Even bottles of alcohol have failed, as have expensive phones, shoes, clothes and a host of other material things. Only within us does true change and progress begin. Each must define his own vision for life, within the context of benefit to others. By defining our vision we would each find the road that leads to it, rather than following the crowd mentality, each must discover his own path and seek to be a leader in that sphere. The man who follows the crowd is bound to get lost in it. While being focused we must always seek to extend the light in our lives, so that our every action is based on knowledge and purpose. In order to increase the light we must see our life as a big learning curve. Knowledge indeed is power. We must therefore see education as a lifetime endeavor “education for life not for living.” We must become “students of life and students for life” seeking knowledge and understanding with every fiber of our being. We must emerge from the shadows of negative press (real and imagined) in which we have been cast, to shine a positive light on our world through our deeds, be they so little. It is our time to shine, shine our light, brimming with optimism, faith and positive actions powered by POSSIBILITY CONSCIOUSNESS. In closing I borrow the words of my dear Bank PHB again “Impossible is possible that hasn’t been done” and “If it doesn’t exist…………invent it.” We have no excuse whatsoever for not embarking on a lifetime journey of potential maximization.

PERSONAL SACRIFICE

Personal sacrifice is inspiring to others, it brings hope to discouraged souls: it produces growth and maturity. There is no true leadership or responsibility without sacrifice. Doing the right thing always pays off, probably not right away, but the momentary relief of an easy solution is nothing compared to the eternal joy of choosing right. When you selflessly give for another, you build an honourable reputation, and promotion will surely follow. Ella Wheeler Wilcox captures the essence of sacrifice beautifully when she says that “there are two kinds of people on earth today. Just two kinds of people no more, I say. Not the good and the bad; for it is well known that the good are half bad & the bad are half good. No! The 2 kinds of people I mean are those who lift and those who lean.”

ANGER

Anger is like bottling something up inside of you and when it reaches elastic limit it bursts. Always remember that anger is normal if well managed and expressed. SYMPTOMS · Lack of forgiving spirit · Constant confusion · Impatience CONTROL · Stop – Always stay calm. Think before you act. · Think – Anger is a reaction to a perceived threat. A deep seated feeling built over time to serve as defense mechanism against a threat. · Talk – To identify feelings that cause anger and it is most likely directed an individual. · Have a plan of action: If it is a person , do I confront him/her. · Finally – Always take responsibility for your state of mind. Don’t blame others for how you feel your mind is the only thing you have control over. MANAGEMENT Use the ‘feel when & because’ approach when talking. Don’t say“You make me look stupid” rather say “I FEEL stupid WHEN you shout at me BECAUSE you do it in public”

RELATIONSHIP TIP:OPINIONS Vs PEOPLE

Anyone who values loves his opinions more than his friends will defend his opinions and destroy his friends. People who are not effective in relationships usually have a higher regard for their opinions than they do for people. We need to step back and look at what is really important to us. Is it really helping or hindering our relationships with people? Give others the benefit of the doubt. We usually rule ourselves with our hearts and others with our heads. We have mercy on ourselves but not on the other person. If you want to build a relationship follow this rule: when working with others, use your heart, but when working with yourself use your head. Give other people the benefit of the doubt. Hold yourself to a higher standard than other people. From: Be All You Can Be By: Dr. John C. Maxwell

DENZEL WASHINGTON: From Red Raiders wannabe to Hollywood icon

In an industry where fame is hard to come by and rarely lasts long, Denzel Washington has certainly made a mark working his way from zero to hero, with three Golden Globe awards and two Academy awards amongst others as worthy feathers to his legendary cap. Notable as the second African American to win an Academy Award for best actor a few years back, his works have earned him critical acclaim especially his portrayal of real life figures such as South African freedom fighter Steve Biko, Malcolm X, Boxer Rubin “Hurricane” Carter, Melvin B Tolson, Frank Lucas and himself in the Lorretta Clairboone story movie. Born Denzel Hayes Washington Jr. to Lennis “Lynne” a beauty parlour owner & Denzel Washington Sr. a Pentecostal minister who also worked for the local Water Dept. & a local Departmental store “S Klein”. His paparents marriage went sour when he was aged 14 and he & his older sister had to be sent to boarding school so as not to be exposed to the eventual divorce. Initially interested in attending Texas Tech university Denzel is quoted to have said “I grew up in the Boys club in Mt. Vernon & we were the Red Raiders. So when I was in high school, I wanted to go to Texas Tech because they were called the Red Raiders and their uniforms looked like ours”. None the less Denzel completed a Ba. in Drama and Journalism from Fordham University, where he played basketball as a freshman guard, after a turbulent period of bouncing from major to major and dropping out for a semester. It was while he was working as a counselor at an overnight summer camp & participating in a staff talent show, that a friend advised he try acting; A star was born. Returning to Fordham that fall, with a renewed vision, he enrolled at the Lincoln center campus to study acting. He earned rave reviews for his performances as title character in Eugene O’Neills The Emperor Jones and Shakespare’s Othello. Upon graduation, he attended graduate school on scholarship at the American Conservatory Theater in San Francisco. He stayed in San Francisco for a year, before returning to New York to begin a pro acting career that has seen him grow into one of Hollywood’s true legends, featuring in several box-office hits. A devout Christian, Denzel is one of a few Hollywood figures to stay married to the same spouse for over two decades. He married actress Paula Washington (Nee Pearson) whom he met on the set of his first screen role, Wilma. The couple has four kids. In 1995 they renewed their vows in South Africa with Arch Bishop Desmond Tutu officiating. Recipient of an honorary Doctorate Degree from Morehouse College in 2007, Denzel has won several awards including Academy Awards for best actor in 2000 and best supporting actor in 1990, BET Awards for best actor 2001 & 2004, Best actor in the Berlin International Film Festival 1993 & 2000, Golden Globe awards for best actor in a drama in a motion picture 1990 & 2000 amongst countless nominations for a variety of awards. He was also voted the peoples sexiest man alive for 1996, succeeding Brad Pitt & George Clooney. Aside from discovering his talent Washington has also strived to make a difference in society. He made a sizeable donation to the Fisher houses, small hotels that provide rooms for soldiers families while the soldiers are hospitalized. He also wrote a bestseller, titled A Hand To Guide Me, for the Boys & Girls Clubs of America’s centennial anniversary. The book featured a number of public figures recalling their childhood mentors. A testimonial of his broad acceptance even, beyond the community of movie enthusiasts, was his being named by the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia as one of three people they were by willing to negotiate with for the release of three US defense contractors held captive by the group since 2003.

INFERIORITY COMPLEX

Inferiority feelings are inborn and wired into us as a kind of step up, a challenge to do better. But in refusing to rise up to this challenge these feelings aggravate to inferiority complex; deep seated feelings of incompetence, inadequacy and low self-worth. CAUSES · Living Conditions: You may feel you are poor so you don’t feel fit with the happening groups. · Negative people: Moods like viruses are infectious, if people around you feel inferior you are likely to catch the bug. MANAGEMENT · When you feel inferior to someone walk up to the person and say ‘Hi, you look good’ · When you meet someone, maintain eye contact, shake their hand firmly and be warm & upbeat in your communication. · Avoid negative people. · Always know your value offering in any group you find yourself. While a shoemaker is an expert at shoemaking a bank manager is an expert at managing banks. You are a specialist in your own field · Relax, always stay calm, you have your own constraints in spite of what the media, advertising, pop psychology and movies tell you. · Finally always make the right choices, confront your feelings rather than bury your head in the sand in the hope that they will go away. Always remember that you are not competing with anyone but yourself. You have your strengths and weaknesses, focus on your strengths and build them to excellence. The best man is he that is assured in himself, regardless of physical conditions. Those who will like you will like you as you are and for those who will not………………. maybe they are just not worthy of your time. Always be yourself there are enough other people in the world and only but one special YOU.

EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATION

The key to effective communication is that the person must be important to you as to create the need to ‘connect’. This means that you must try and listen to the other person on his own turf, on his own terms. You must try not to use your opinions to invalidate the other persons experience. For example if someone were trying to tell you something that happened, don’t say things like you shouldn’t have done that, rather listen and reserve judgment. We live in an age where where people tend more to use LANGUAGE OF THE HEAD. Language of the head is a way of mentally classifying people into black and white, good and bad, right and wrong. Language of the head looks without for the cause of a problem and its solution. i.e. fails to take responsibility. It is about generalization and not specifics. It is based on perception of past experience and not present reality. It provokes defensiveness. LANGUAGE OF THE HEART on the other hand is not judgmental; rather it relates what happened to a particular thing that happened. Communication is more how you say what you want to say than what you say itself. You must strive to talk with people rather than at them. COMMUNICATION EQUATION · Relevant content. 10% · Voice tone 35% · Gestures and action 55%

BRAIN FACTS

Before you ever say “I CANT” again in your life think about these facts · The human brain is just bigger two fists combined · Your nerves send messages to your brain faster than a leading Formula One car. · If each person on our planet makes 200,000 phone calls simultaneously (i.e. about 6 – 7 billion x 200,000), that would be about the same number of connections in a single human brain in a single day. · At times of extreme stress , crisis or danger the brain usually creates a “suspended reality” frame of mind which shields us from the immediacy of the situation & allows us to get through it rationally. · No technological invention or machine ever invented can compare with the complexity of the human brain. The next time you are tempted to say’I cant’ or ’Impossible’think of what you do have: THE GREATEST TOOL IN HUMAN HISTORY. Always think of what is possible.

FUNDAMENTAL ATTRIBUTION ERROR

The tendency to overestimate the influence of dispositional factors and underestimate the influence of situational factors when evaluating the behaviour of others (but not ourselves) for example if I had a car accident ‘it is the fault of the other driver’,’ the road was wet’, ‘the other driver cut me off’ blah blah blah amongst a thousand other flimsy excuses we make for our problems. But if you did tell yourself the truth it is because you are a bad driver. As political scientist Samuel Popkin puts it”Because we tend to overestimate the reasonableness of our own actions, we also overestimate the probability that others would also do what we would do. For this reason we tend to believe that people who make mistakes or blunders are revealing their true character” The things we do and those done to us are not measured in the same unit, but we must check ourselves and see what we can do about the situation rather than lament about it. That’s the attitude of progressives. We must adopt the attitude of ‘fixing the problem’ rather than the attitude of ‘fixing the blame’. It may not be your fault but it is your problem and as a wise saying goes if its be, its up to me.

Emile COUÉ (Self Mastery)

The complete CouĂ©'s formulation Read it, write it, recod it, listent to it, it's one of the best positive textever written and used. Here is the complete Emile CouĂ© formulation: «Maintain a calm, soothing tone of voice as you read the formulations. When you are familiar with the text, you might want to record it so it can be played back while you are in the alpha state. Get comfortable, either sitting down or lying on your back, and close your eyes. I don’t want you to try and fall asleep. I am telling you to close your eyes so you can concentrate without being distracted by anything you might see. Now tell yourself that everything I am going to say will be recorded by your brain, engraved in your mind. And that, without your knowing it, without any effort on your part, your organism and your entire being will obey what your subconscious mind tells you to do. The first thing I am going to tell you is that every day, 3 times a day, morning, noon and evening, at mealtimes, you will feel hungry. You will experience the pleasant sensation of feeling slightly hungry and think, “Mm, I’d love to have something to eat!”And you will eat, savoring every mouthful, enjoying your food immensely, without eating too much. You’ll be careful to chew your food well, transforming it into a soft paste in your mouth before you swallow. This will help you digest well, so that you will feel absolutely no discomfort in your stomach or intestines afterwards, no pain or heartburn, no discomfort at all. Your body will digest and assimilate the food you ingest perfectly, using all the nutrients it contains to renew your supply of blood, muscles, energy -in short, to regenerate life. Because you digest your food well, your intestines will function normally and effectively. Every morning, shortly after you wake up, you will feel the need to go to the bathroom. Your bowel movements will be normal and satisfying, and you won’t need the help of any kind of medication or artificial stimulant. Every night, from the moment you want to go to sleep to the moment you wake up in the morning, you will be able to sleep deeply and calmly, without having any bad dreams. When you wake up in the morning you will feel fresh and fully rested, ready to enjoy the day. If you sometimes feel sad or depressed, if you sometimes get bored or worry too much, you can est assured that you won’t have those kinds of feelings any more. Instead of feeling sad or depressed, instead of worrying, you will feel happy, very happy, for no eason at all, in the same way that you may have felt sad for no eason from time to time. From now on you’ll feel happy and joyous inside. And even if you have eal cause to worry or feel sad, you won’t fall into depression. You will do what has to be done, nourished by the joy and happiness of being alive. If you sometimes became impatient or angry in the past, you won’t anymore. From now on you will have infinite patience, you’ll always be able to control your anger. You will no longer be bothered by the things that used to irritate or upset you in the past. If you sometimes find yourself thinking terrible things, things that are unhealthy for you, fears, phobias, temptations, hateful thoughts, rest assured that these kinds of thoughts will arise less and less frequently in your mind. And whenever they do, they will melt away, like clouds dissolving in a clear sky, until they disappear completely. All your useless, harmful thoughts will simply vanish, just like a dream when you awaken. All your bodily organs are functioning well. Your heart is beating normally, blood is circulating freely through your body, nourishing all your cells. Your lungs are functioning normally, as are your stomach, liver, gall bladder, kidneys, and bladder. If one of your organs happens to be functioning abnormally at the moment, est assured that the problem will get better day by day, and in the very near future, disappear altogether, so that all your organs can function normally. And if any of your organs have developed lesions, the lesions will start healing as of now. They will get better day by day, until very soon they will have disappeared completely. I also have this to say, and it is very important: if, in the past, you felt there was something wrong with you, if there was something you didn’t like about yourself, est assured that from now on whatever was bothering you about yourself will gradually start to disappear, and will be eplaced by a strong sense of self confidence, based on the strength you draw from that immeasurable force that exists in each and every one of us. You should know that this unshakable confidence in yourself is absolutely indispensable for all human beings. Without self confidence you’ll never amount to anything, with it you can do anything you want, within eason. Your self confidence will get stronger day by day. It will provide you with the certitude that, not only are you able to do things well, you are able to do whatever you want -and whatever it is your duty to do -extremely well, on condition, of course, that what you want is within the bounds of reason. So whenever you want to do something, or when you have some duty to fulfil, always emember that the task will be easy for you. Wo ds like difficult, impossible, can’t, too much, not good enough … and so on, will disappear from your vocabulary, and be replaced by words like I can, it’s so easy, I will … If you think something is easy, then it becomes easy for you, although it might seem difficult to others. Whatever you do will be done quickly and effectively, without fatigue, almost without effort. But if you consider something difficult or impossible, then it will become difficult or impossible for you, just because of the way you think. (CouĂ© suggests that specific formulations pertaining to individual cases be introduced at this point. ). Rest assured that in all ways, both physically and mentally, you will enjoy excellent health. You will start feeling much healthier than you’ve ever felt before. Now I’m going to count to 3, and when I say ‘three’you’ll open your eyes and emerge from the state you’re in, slowly, gradually. As you resurface you won’t feel at all tired. On the contrary, you’ll feel strong, vigorous, alert, refreshed, bursting with energy. You’ll also feel happy and joyous, both in yourself and in all your relations with others. 1 … 2 … 3. . . »

Sacred Tears

She was in the greatest distress. Her son, her darling son, had just been killed by an enemy's sword. She knelt at the feet of the sage, crying, hoping to find comfort. The sage listened to her crying for hours. Then he listened as she spoke of her son when he was alive. And then he listened as she spoke of the emptiness of her life after his death. Finally the sage gently spoke. "Woman, I don't have the power to dry your tears, but I can teach you how to make them sacred." (c)2005, http://www.positive-club.com/ ......................................... No one can avoid suffering. But should we? No, because often the road of suffering is sacred, necessary to heal the hurts of the world. Healing causes suffering, and yet it is healing that causes wounds to close. We must learn to apply reason as a balm to our unhappiness. Doing so will make it bearable .......................................... "What the caterpillar calls the end of the world, the sage calls a butterfly." Richard Bach

Do the right things and the right things will happen

Life is not meant to be complicated. It is straightforward. It'ssimply a matter of doing the right things. And when we do so, theright things will happen. The reward for doing the right thingsis success, happiness, and fulfillment. But when we do the wrongthings, we reap failure, misery, and regret. So, what are thewrong things? The list below is enough to get you started. Aftergoing through it, you will quickly think of other things to addto the list. Just think of the right things as the things thatwork, and the wrong things as the things (actions) that don'twork. If what you are doing is bringing you closer to your goalsand dreams, you are doing the right things. On the other hand, ifsuccess is no where in sight, you are unhappy, and you arefeeling frustrated, they are signs that you are doing the wrongthings. Now is a good time to take stock of your actions and askyourself whether you're doing the right or wrong things. THE WRONG THINGS: 1. Denial. The first step in overcoming a problem is to admitthat we have one. Most of us are imperfect and have a problem ortwo in one or more areas of life. Here's a simple test. If you'reunhappy, you're doing something wrong. If that describes you, tryto find out what you are doing wrong and correct the situation. 2. Unwilling to work at it. I have heard many people say, "Self-help books and self-improvement programs don't work for me." ThenI have to explain, "Self-help books and programs are not supposedto work, YOU are supposed to work! Just carry out the exercisesyou have learned and practice them for 15 ~ 20 minutes a day. Ifyou were to do so, it is impossible not to improve." How do theyknow the books and programs don't work when they don't practicewhat is taught? 3. Looking for the easy way instead of the right way. The onlyshort cut to success is hard work. Hard work may not comenaturally, but we have the capacity to develop self-discipline,which is an essential skill. Self-discipline is nothing less thanthe freedom to reach our dreams. When viewed in that light, itsimportance should become clear. 4. Ignoring the warning signs. Unhappiness and the failure toreach our goals are warning signs. The pain brought on by thesepredicaments is life's way of screaming at us, "What you aredoing isn't working. Try doing things differently." Yet, ratherthan heed the warning signs, some prefer to blame their problemson "bad luck." Others claim they are victims of circumstances orfate. The reality is they are victims of their own negativethoughts and beliefs. How much better it is to be the beneficiaryof one's own positive thoughts. 5. Failure to plan. When we fail to plan, we plan to fail. Wecan't just wait for things to happen. We have to make themhappen. And we do so by carefully planning and taking theappropriate steps. It's time to stop brooding and whining andstart planning for success. It's time to ask ourselves, "What doI want? Why do I want it? Why don't I already have what I want? What am I doing wrong? What steps do I have to take and in whatorder? When will I begin? What obstacles am I likely to encounterand how will I overcome them?" 6. Failure to take responsibility. What happens to us is theresults of our own actions or inaction. We can blame others orcircumstances if we want, but that doesn't help at all. Ratherthan do something about their problems, some stand around waitingto be rescued by others. They wait for a knight in shining armorto save them, but they wait in vain. Far better to depend onyourself. 7. Trying to do as little as possible instead of as much aspossible. Some avoid work as if it were a disease. But when we doas little as possible, we learn and progress as little aspossible. This leads to frustration, stress, loss of energy, andless ambition. In other words, we find ourselves in a downwardspiral. But when we work as much as possible, we make rapidprogress, experience pride, self-respect, and the joy of reapingthe rewards that follow a job well done. 8. Failure to apply what we learn. A meal provides no nutrientsunless we eat it. Similarly, books, articles, and advice provideno help unless we integrate into our lives what we've learned.Neglecting to apply what we've learned is the same as notlearning it. 9. Failure to regularly monitor one's progress. How can wecorrect our course unless we know where we're going? We need toregularly survey our progress. Are we on course or are wedrifting off course? Why leave things to chance when we canmonitor our results and make corrections as needed? Also, discovering our mistakes early allows us to learn from them andto nip failure in the bud. 10. Giving up too early. Temporary setbacks become failures onlyif we stop in our tracks. But if we make it our policy to refuseto give up until we reach our destination, we'll never fail. 11. Failure to get along with others. Some believe they live in ahostile world, so they act in a hostile manner, alienatingothers. But those who believe they live in a friendly world trustand support others. As a consequence, they receive trust andsupport from everyone they deal with. What is your opinion? Doyou believe you live in a friendly or hostile world? It doesn'tmatter whether your opinion is right or wrong. What matters iswhether your opinion works for you or not. Positive thinkersbelieve we live in a friendly world, so they get along withothers and become successful. In a word, what they are doingworks. 12. Failure to be flexible and adaptable. We can tell life wherewe want to go and what we want to do, but it may have betterplans for us, so we have to be willing to change our route tosuccess. If we remain inflexible, stubbornly sticking to apersonal goal, we may not recognize a golden opportunity when itappears. For example, I may decide I want to become a famouswriter, but life may want me to become a great teacher. As longas I remain flexible, when a teaching opportunity arrives, I willbe able to consider it. Besides, my ultimate goal is for success, and either writing or teaching can get me there. 13. A belief that they already know it all or know more thanothers. When we think we know more than others, we're notinterested in hearing what they have to say and grow deaf to thewisdom offered by others in casual conversations. To benefit themost from life, not only should we carefully listen to whatothers have to say, but we should be willing to be changed bywhat we hear. On several occasions, my life was dramaticallychanged by the words of ordinary people. 14. Lack of commitment. A dream without commitment is no morethan a wish. But when we are committed, we are willing to dowhatever it takes to succeed. We may have to reach deep, downinside to find it, but commitment is part of the inner resourcesof all. Just as we may be unaware of vast reserves of oil lyingbeneath the soil we stand on, many are ignorant of their reservesof commitment. All we have to do is drill down to tap into it,and once it gushes forth, there won't be anything we cannot do! 15. Looking backward instead of forward. True, some of us weredealt nasty blows in the past. Insurmountable obstacles may haveblocked our way. But that was the past. Now it is time to moveforward. It is time to plan and prepare for the future. It istime to focus on what we want instead of what we don't want; timeto focus on what we have instead of what we lack, and time tofocus on solutions instead of excuses. Your life is a precious gift. What do you plan to do with it? You won't have to worry if you do the right things, for then the right things will happen to you. INDEPENDENT LIFE

"Independence & economic spoon feeding go ill together" AWOLOWO To life an independent life you must be courageous in the face ofchallenges: an independent life is not necessary one without challengebut one which challenges are put in proper perspective. Peter the heroof High Walpole novet fortifude said it is not life that matters butthe courage you bring to life.An independent life.: is one that courageously responds. A life thatknow that every thing happens for its fulfillment. Peter mentionedabove afterlife had done "trible" bring to him head a voice that saidto him."blessed be all sorrow hardships and endevous that demand courage.Blessed be those things: for of these thing cometh the making of aman"quoting awo once again just before he went to prison" it is a with abrave, within confident hope, and within faith in my unalterabled4estiny that I go from this twilighty into for darkness, unshaken inmy trust in the providence of God that a glorious dawn will come onthe morrowas his poet once said the past is a story told the future may be writein gold. You cant go back and start afresh but you can from now startwithin belief in the future born out of courage start again and make abeautiful ending."you will never do any thing in this world without courage. PERSONALITY BRANDING

Personality branding is one process of building into solidity andvisibility ones inner/international strong and abilities to a specifictarget market, while getting rid of flows or reducing them toinsignificance, in relations to strength s.It is the catalyst that takes the from success to significance, fromposition to personhood, from being a harder to becoming aninstitution without the exploit of strong personal brands over theyear the world would have been much worse than what it is today.Brand management is key to sustenance of the brand over time. A commonbrand in successful personality brand is consistency of character andpurpose. The individual must ensure that the image he casts doesn'tdeplete over time.COMMUNICATION comes in here: Every thing one does or doesn't do is acommunication of the value and character of his personality.Communication may or may not be a deliberate act, but appearances docount and a individual must only learn how to make exterior profile areflection of his inner strength.Personality brand communication: is how an individual expresseshimself and his unique characteristics to the public. It starts intotranslation of belief and inner traits to visual elements i.e. usingphysical things to express what it stand for. Castro's blend as areflection of the lack of blandes in one days of the strengthlaqbaja's mask for the facelessness of the common man.Next is marketing the appropriate media and PR initiations such asspeeches, press releases, inter views and ads amongst others. The key element of a strong personality brand includes. 1. Specialization: Wole so yinka (WS) wordmiton a specialist withwords. Successful brand are known in a particular field to beexcellent. Successful brands form and strengthens to build corecompetence 2. Sense of Purpose: Born out of personal experience, Mandela andApartneid knau and KHF 3. Christ captures one important of this when hesaid "he who would be greatest among it must be the servant of all"

UPBRINGING All I can or hope to be I owe to my angel in orderMissionWith malice to ward more ands charity toward all, with firmness in theright as God gives us to see the right, lets finish the work we arein. SELF DESTRUCTION He remind of a man who killed both his parent and when the judgment isabout to be passed plead for mercy on one grounds that he is anorphan.DEDICATIONWhat ever you are be a good one. ACTION The probability that we may fail in the struggle ought not to deter usfrom the support of a cause we believe to be just. CHALLENGES Only the test of the fire can produce finest steel ADVERSARIES Don't criticized them they are just what we would under similar circumstances FAILURE My great concern is not when ever you have failed but whether you are concerned with failure. LIBERTY As I would not be a slave so I would not be a master. This expresses my idea of democracy FORCE Force is all conquering but its victories are short lived HIS CRITICS If I tried to answer all the criticisms of me & all the attacks targeted at me, this office will be closed to all other business. My job is not pleasing men but doing the best I can. If in the end I am found to be wrong, ten legions of angels swearing I was right wont help me. If the end prove me to be right then all that is said about me now will amount to nothing. PERSONAL CONTENTION No man who is resolved to make the most of himself can spare time for personal contention still less can he afford to the consequences including the vitiation of his temper and the loss of self control. SELF CONTROL Self control is like a tree and reputation like its shadow. The shadow is what we think of it. The tree is the real thing COMPROMISE Better to give your path to a dog then be bitten by him in contesting for the right. Even killing the dog wont cure the bite. LOVE There is a morality of memory; LOVE keeps a list of its creditors but none of its debtors IMMORTALITY Surely God would not have created such a being as man to exist for a day. No no man was created for immortality PERSUASION A drop of honey catches more flies then a gallon of gall so with men, if you would win a man to your cause fist convince him that you are his sincere friend. Therein is the drop of honey that catches his heart which, say what you will, is the high road to his reason STRATEGY When am getting ready to reason with a man I spend 1/3 of my time thinking about myself & what am going to say and 2/3 of the time thinking about him and what he is going to say. PREPARATION I will prepare and my time will definitely come

MY STORY

I have searched, all my life, for answers but ended up with even more questions.I may have failed (even more than I have succeeded)but I have come to love and appreciate each and every day of my life & the beautiful people I have been privileged to share it with:each and every one of you has helped little me grow BIG. God in His infinite mercies & divine providence has blessed me immensely through all of you, from those with whom I shared a simple "Hi" to those I have shared the most intimate parts, dreams and hopes of my life with. For these and more reasons, I say a BIG thank you and may God bless you, even as He has through you blessed me. To all of you my sisters, brothers, fathers, mothers and friends I say, to borrow the words of famous Nigerian crooner Tuface Idibia, "WITHOUT YOU THERE WOULD BE NO ME".You all are the reason for my existence on earth. In light of all these, there is only one spot in my life reserved for you all-Number One.For in your own special ways you have all been special blessings. Today the BIG question is have I found the answers? Yes:Right there in the questions themselves, lie the answers and the keys to life. In asking the BIG questions I have come to understand that life is one BIG classroom with lessons to learn at every twist and turn.

MY PHILOSOPHY

I BELIEVE THAT LIFE IS A TEST. But this test is different from the conventional test, in that the lessons come afeter the test. The important thing is not to pass the test and move on, rather it is to take it first and foremost and then to learn the lessons that are sure to follow. The key to life is to keep getting better, learning both from our successes and FAILURES. It is not about always doing but also (this is where most of us get it wrong) about learning from those things that we dont do so well, how to do better. Nothing in life is insignificant: Life is a series of well ordered causes and effects based on certain principles(Chief of which is the principle of sowing and reaping), not an accident of chance happenings.Life is what we make of it. I BELIEVE THAT THE GREATEST ROOM IN LIFE IS THE ROOM FOR IMPROVEMENT & in this room shall I abide night and day come what may for the rest of my life. I will continue to seek out ways of improving myself, everyday of my life(STUDENT OF LIFE, STUDENT FOR LIFE). tHERE CAN BE NO SUCH THING AS STANDING STILL IN LIFE, WE ARE EITHER MOVING FORWARD OR BACKWARDS & i CONSCIOUSLY CHOOSE TO MOVE FORWARD. I have come to understand that this great test called life isnt about reaching a passmark and going to sleep, but rather its about continuous improvement & development. "We exist" as Brian Tracy says "in a state of becoming"therefore everyday and in everyway am becoming better and better.I am a student of life and a student for life.
